A whole bunch of information for you!~Dear Parents,


We are very excited to begin our 2nd and last year as  Brownie Troop 41588 here at Ames. Those girls who wish to continue on as Girl Scouts, will have the opportunity to do Bridging activities that will help them next year as Junior Girl Scouts.

We have 11 girls who will be joining us this year.
Cameron, Mia, Claire, Zosia, Quincy, Emily, Amber, Briyana, Tess , Lulu and Mollie

We have a wonderful group of Moms and friends who will take various roles in the troop, all with the goal of making this a memorable year for our Brownies.

free to contact any of the leaders below with any questions you may have.

We have so many exciting things planned…..we hope you can join us as we and our last year of Brownies and prepare our girls to move on to the next step in the Great World of Scouting.

Information:
In keeping with our paperless pledge, when possible we will Contact parents via email of troop happenings.  A blog has been set up at blogger and parents are encouraged to become followers of the blog.

Meeting & Snack Schedule:
2nd and  4th  Tuesdays a month……unless otherwise noted below due to school holidays , 3:15 pm – 4:30pm


  • Snacks may include finger foods:cheese, crackers, grapes, apples, bananas, granola, yogurt?
  • Girls will be required to bring a reusable water bottle to fill with water for snack.
  • *Snack girl will also be responsible for starting the Friendship squeeze in the Friendship Circle "see explanation at the end of this letter"








While parents are not required to attend monthly meetings, on occasion they will be asked to participate in various events or outing and are strongly encouraged to volunteer time to at least one meeting. If you can help in any capacity, please contact any one of the Leaders listed above.




Badges:
  • Badges will be earned over a period of several meeting.  Badges will be handed out at meetings and the final ceremony at the end of the year.

No January Investiture will be done this year as we have no new scouts to our troop.

Membership Dues:
     *   $12 = Girl Scouts of America Membership Fee
*   $12= Adult membership fee: dues will cover the membership into the  GSUSA and will include an automatic insurance coverage from the   GSUSA for all outing, trips and overnighters that the parent goes on.
·         $60= Chapter Dues.   includes all Badges, Patches and pins earned, Crafts, Activity supplies.     
  • 2 checks please: *$24  Payable to :      Girl Scouts of America
                                        * $60 Payable to :      Troop 41588.
  • No girl should be turned away due to financial reasons. The Girl Scouts have a confidential financial assistance to those who are unable to cover fees.         

Field Trips:
Field trips will be arranged in the community. Transportation is to be arranged by parents. Field trip may require a small fee.


Meetings:
  • Start-Up: A simple activity to be done as girls arrive/ allowing the leaders to get set up.
  • Opening: Girl Scout Promise, flag ceremony/ Color Guard, and a simple song.
  • Brownie Ring: Troop information to be shared with the girls and possible decision making
  • Activities: One or more program activities or craft
  • Snack: Each meeting a different girls will be asked to bring a healthy snack to share with the troop.   Girls will receive notice prior to their snack date.
  • Clean Up: A Girl Scout leaves a place cleaner than she found it.
  • Closing a meeting : Closing Song, Good Bye until next time.

Patrols:
Due to the small group we have, Patrols will be done at camp. Girls will Have individual assignments at meetings. Click on picture below to enlarge.





Job Descriptions:
  • American/GS Flags : Take out and set up stands, Participate in Flag Ceremony, Take down and put away stands at the end of the meeting.
  • Color Guard: Assist in Set up and take down of Flags, Participate in Flag Ceremony
  • Caller: Participate in Flag Ceremony
  • Troop Recycler: In charge of collecting all plastic grocery bags at the end of the meeting ,  count and being to Riverside Foods for recycling
  • Troop Secretary: take attendance, remind people of their jobs, gather supplies for activities of missing girls and bag them with their name as well as pass out materials as needed.
  • Clean Up: Will be required to stay an additional 5 min following the meeting for final clean up, scraps off floor, chairs pushed in, supplies where they belong and lights out.
  • Alternate: To take the place of any girl who is absent from doing her job and help out if more materials need to be distributed.



Uniform:
white,  cream or blue shirt and Brown vest
. Because our uniform helps the girls identify themselves with the Girl Scouts , please have your Brownie in Uniform on Meeting Days and outside field trips.  

                    



Girl Scout Glossary:
· Girl Scout sign: Hold the middle three fingers up by putting your pinky
and your thumb together.
· Girl Scout handshake: Shake hands with your left hand while making the Girl Scout sign with your right hand.
·Friendship circle: This stands for an unbroken chain of friendship with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all around the world. Everyone stands in a circle and places their right arm over her left and holds hands. Everyone makes a silent wish as a friendship squeeze is passed from hand to hand.
· Friendship squeeze: After someone shares something in the circle, she squeezes the hand of the person standing next to her, who shares something and then squeeze passes on around the circle.
· Quiet sign: Hold up your right hand. As people in the group see the quiet sign, they stop talking and also raise their hands. Once everyone is silent, the meeting continues.
· Girl Scout motto: “Be prepared!”
· Girl Scout slogan: “Do a good turn daily!”
· Brownie Ring: A circle that the girls can sit in to share ideas.

What a fantastic family evening. 
Despite the illness and the out of town Brownies we still had a great showing. 24 people including parents, siblings, cousins and friends came to learn about wall climbing and enjoyed a night of Pizza afterwards.


It was especially nice after working so hard at our successful site sales….. I cant say enough about how proud I am about the way the girls conducted themselves and the great job they did.

I was amazed at how fearless all our climbers were! I think we should definitely try this again~

First Site Sale a HUGE SUCCESS~

On average the Girls scouts formula states that you should sell roughly 20 cookies per hour of sales...

We sold roughly 150 boxes.....~    For the 3 hours of sales that averages to 50 boxes per hour~   Way to go girls.....

Junior Bridging 2011




All our girls are eligible to Bridge to Juniors.  We are asking for a $10 fee to cover the activity and Badge/patches.  Girls will receive their bridge patch, their Junior wings and their Junior GS Pin.  They will continue to wear their current WAGGS pin.
I am also collecting the uniform/books cost for those parents who would like me to pick them up. I will be accepting this fee till April 15th.  I will just need to know what size vest your girl will be wearing. The girls asked if we could do the sash this year and I told them that we do too many activities and their badges would never fit. They all laughed and agreed.

Support Kraft Foods Donation to GIrl Scouts Before March 11!
On Feb. 10, 2011, the Girl Scouts teamed up with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Kraft Foods to highlight the importance of healthful eating habits and active lifestyles at a National Let's Move Town Hall broadcast in Washington, D.C. and joined by Girl Scouts nationwide.

As part of this, the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana prepared nutritious after-school snack recipes with Kraft Foods and elected their favorite recipe. Kraft Foods launched a special donation program and you can help!

For every parent, volunteer or other adult viewing the Girl Scouts’ favorite recipe at between now and March 11, 2011, Kraft Foods will donate $1 (up to a total of $20,000) to Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana. The donation is limited to $1 per person. Click here to participate!

Camp Survivor goes “Wild West”

Yee-haw cowgirls! Jump in your stagecoach and head to O’Hara Woods. Cowpoke campers will work on prairie crafts, campfire songs, hiking, fishing, games, outdoor cooking, and daily ranch challenges. On Friday, all cowgirls and ranch hands will participate in a Girl Scout “rodeo” and gather ‘round for an old-fashioned chuck wagon supper. Friday overnight camping option is available for girls entering 4th grade and up in the fall.  Camp fee will include: a theme patch, progression patch, T-shirt, bandana, 1 lunch and 1 dinner.

Junior Jumble

Junior Naturalist
Take your nature knowledge to the next level. Explore nature through games, scavenger hunts and hiking. Night Owls

Feeling Fit-Feeling Fine
Are you fit and ready for a challenge?  How many steps will you take during your week at camp?  We’ll put on our pedometers to find out just how far we travel during our week at camp. There’s water aerobics, yoga, archery and more in our fitness week. Make healthy snacks and fruit smoothies! Can you complete the fitness course?  Work on activities from the “Fun & Fit,” “Stress Less,” “Highway to Health” and “Healthy Living” badges along with general camp program.

Junior Jumble
Not ready for a full week at camp?  Not sure what you want to do? Explore all the different program opportunities available to you. Choose to do a scavenger hunt, archery, sports, or hike the trails. All girls will swim, cook a meal over a campfire, meet new friends and have lots of fun. Together you decide what that fun will be! Choose to do badge activities.

Junior Naturalist
Take your nature knowledge to the next level. Explore nature through games, scavenger hunts and hiking. Learn about orienteering, bird watching, and “Leave No Trace” camping.  Learn about the plants and trees at camp. Plan a “Take Action” project that will help protect the camp environment. Work on the “Earth Connections” and “Eco-Action” badges. The fun continues during a field trip to Journey World. Discover  the power of alternative energy in teams. General camp program and lots of fun are a part of your week.

Night Owls
Connect with the wonders of nature after everyone else has hit the sack. Throw a star party, look for constellations and get wet on a moonlight swim. Stay up late, sleep in and cook breakfast in your unit.  Do a midnight craft and take a night hike. Some activities from the “Sky Search” badge will be worked on. General camp program included.

Outdoor Bound
At the end of the camp week are you wishing you didn’t have to go home? This two-week Girl Scout Junior camp experience is just for you!  Spend more time hiking, swimming, making new friends and doing the things you love about camp. Girls will be able to choose what badge activities they want to work on and plan their camp program.

Outdoor Cook-Outdoor Fun
Enhance your outdoor skills while feeling your creative side. Learn how to start a campfire, tie knots, discover what to do in emergency situations. Dabble in outdoor cooking. Discover your hidden talents-drawing, painting, poetry or journal writing. Connect with the natural world with several hands-on activities. General camp program, swimming and lots of fun will be a part of your week. Work on “Outdoor Cook” and “Outdoor Fun” badges.

Shutterbugs
Are you a camera bug? Grab your camera (35 mm) and get ready to explore the beauty of camp. Take portraits of new friends, landscape shots, and document camp activities. Pictures will be developed and complete a scrapbook page of their camp memories. General camp program, swimming, games, and cookouts are included. Activities from the “Camera Shots” badge will be worked on.Fee: $200

Time Traveler
Discover the history surrounding Camp Juniper Knoll. Explore Old World Wisconsin, and pioneer girl life. This two-week camp session will offer lots of time to celebrate Girl Scout History and try activities from past badge books. Your “travels” will include connecting with girls as you work on the New “It’s Your Story” journey.  There will be lots of time to do the things you love about camp! Swimming, songs, campfires and more!
