Thinking Day Postcard Exchanges 2011

We must accept the fact that transport and communications will bring the world in close relations and the youth of the world should have standards and ideals in common. Juliette G. Low

Our Membership has been accepted to participate in the 2011 Thinking Day Postcard exchange

February 22, 2011 is  World Thinking Day, girls participate in activities, games, and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. World Thinking Day is part of the WAGGGS Global Action Theme (GAT) based on the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which aim to improve the lives of the world's poorest people. The theme for World Thinking Day 2011 is girls worldwide say "Empowering girls will change our world."
World Thinking Day not only gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, but is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community—one of nearly 150 countries with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.  WAGGGS selected five countries of focus for World Thinking Day 2011 to represent the five WAGGGS regions:  Bolivia (Western Hemisphere), Cyprus(Europe), Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa), Nepal (Asia/Pacific),Yemen(Arab Region).
Our Brownies have the opportunity to exchange postcards with girl scouts just like themselves around the world! This activity will complete our making connections patch of our Journeys series.

During the Holiday break I will be contacting the girls to get an idea of what countries as well as states they would like to exchange with.

Please feel free to contact me via email with this information as well.

Meeting Updates….November 30th

 Meeting Updates….

What a wonderful meeting.  Ms. B was our special guest and she discussed what SHE did as a Brownie and even brought her old uniforms. It brought a smile to my face to hear the girls eager to explain what they do to her and compare badges. As a leader I was seeing any one of our Brownies talking 20 years in the future to special Brownies they know about what they did and showing off their uniforms and badges.

This is what I will think about as I plan meetings.  Will this make for a memorable learning moment when it is all said and done? The only memory I still don’t foresee our girls having is TENT camping as a Brownie…..at least I am not going to be sleeping in the tent~J

Ms. B also stayed with us to complete another part of our Journeys Badge….Connections to other Brownies.  We made photo cubes using photos from our lasts events.  I am sure your Brownie has shown you hers by now.  I will bring the photos to the next meeting as well and the girls may take home any they would like.

Our second project was a little foreshadowing of things to come.  I prepared a sample of t-shirt rings to have each girl participate in making a scarf for Ms. B as a thank you for joining us.  Each girl joined 3 rings by tying them together.  She then worked with the other Brownies at her table to connect all of their rings.  Once that was done they joined the rings strands from each table together making one long scarf. The results were fantastic. I know the girls are now really excited to make their own scarf’s in January!

Please read the following note to your Brownie:

Mrs. Winkler,

Thank you so very much for allowing me to come in and share!  I had a fantastic time and absolutely love the scarf.  I wore it to school today to keep me warm with this December weather that is fast approaching, and even got a chance to get a picture with all of the Ames girls with myself wearing the scarf (a much better picture than just me).

These brownies have a special place in my heart always and it was definitely a memorable experience!

Thank you again,
Miss B.

Brownie Journey Necklaces

The girls were given their Journey Necklaces today.Originally our plan was to give them each an individual key once they earned each section.  Unfortunately the necklaces weren’t designed that way. We are asking the girls to wear the necklaces throughout the year just as they would their uniform. Whenever they are in uniform, they should also wear their necklace reminding them that they are part of a growing connection to family friend community and world.

Subject: HELP, PLEASE

Dear Friends,

We have just found out that the food pantry at Riverside Township is
empty. Our village and a friend   both gave cash donations to help start
it again., but we decided with Sue and Guy that we would start collecting now ,
nonperishable food, not expired Please bring next week to the village or
to the library where Bob Lifka okayed it too.

We send many people there and we have to have a lot to keep it going
esp. over winter months.
